Gait Analysis is a clinical term meaning the formal measurement of a walking pattern. It is commonly used in sports biomechanics to help athletes walk/run more efficiently and to identify posture-related or movement-related problems in people with or without injuries. Although the tests have various procedures and equipment; video recording, kinetic and kinematic measurements, electromyography (EMG) are the most common instruments in gait analysis.
The patient is being video-taped while walking/running.
Gait Kinematics and Kinetics:
For identification of body segments, reflective markers are stuck onto the body segments such as feet, legs, pelvis and trunk (if necessary: shoulders to hips). During the test digital cameras record the markers’ movements to measure motion (kinematics) ofthe segments. Calculation of the gait patterns kinetics is performed trough floor-mounted load transducers, also known as force platforms, which measure the ground reaction forces and moments, including the magnitude, direction and location (center of pressure).
