Antalya has hosted thousands of athletes and sport enthusiasts for the Gloria Ironman 70.3 Turkey

Organised for the third time in Antalya, the final of the Gloria Ironman 70.3 Turkey was as magnificent as its start. 1375 athletes and 100 teams from 55 countries participated in the race, which was started this year by Nicholas Watson, who opened the competition by pulling his sick 14-year-old son, Rio, in a canoe. Professional male and female competitors followed Watson, entering the sea on the beach of Gloria Serenity Resorts to begin the 1.9km swimming course.

Competitors completed the swimming stage before continuing on to the 90km cycling race, which passed through the EXPO Fair Ground. The final stage of the competition was the 21km race, which took place within the Gloria Hotels & Resorts’ golf courses, and ended at the Gloria Sports Arena.

 

South African triathlete Jeren Seegers won in the Male category of the Gloria Ironman 70.3 Turkey, with a time of 4 hours, 6 minutes and 52 seconds, closely followed by Russia’s
Sergey Khazov with a time of 4:09:05. In third place was Russia’s Eger Vinogradau, with a time of 4:09:29. The athletes received their awards by Münir Karaoğlu, the Governor of Antalya. In the Women’s category, Belgian triathlete Sara Van der Wel finished first with a time of 4 hours, 25 minutes and 31 seconds. Russian athlete Arina Sgulgina took second place with a time of 4:34:41, followed by Britain’s Kerry Mcgawley, who placed third in the Women’s category with a time of 4:42:49. The three female place winners were presented with their awards by South African Olympic and World Champion Swimmer, Chad le Clos.

Most competitors of the Gloria Ironman 70.3 Turkey came from Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, England, Germany or Switzerland, with athletes’ ages ranging from 18 to 76. The number of Turkish athletes which participate in the race increases each year, with Turkish competitors making up 40% of the total number of triathletes in the competition. The number of international athletes competing has also increased by 50% since last year, and in addition to the athletes taking part in the competition, many businessmen and CEOs also competed in the race. The Nuri Özaltın team comprised of Nevşin Mengü, and national athletes Bahar Saygılı and Ediz Yıldırımer. This year, the Gloria Ironman 70.3 Turkey also saw the first Ironman from Iran, Shirin Gerami, compete in the race.
